Spirals
are called the "Golden Rule" of building, art and architecture. Spirals
occur and are represented in most aspects of our lives. We are surrounded by examples
of spirals. From the beginning of time and long before humans walked the
earth, spirals have existed. They endure through the fabric of the universe -
inherent in all matter. In
the vastness of space, our universe consists of many galaxies comprising stars,
planets and matter, swirling endlessly in circles and spirals, constantly changing
either slowly or fast. From the atoms, which are the basis of all life, they are
found in all DNA - the very building blocks of all matter. In
the composition of nature and all natural phenomena - spirals occur and always
have. Since
time immemorial, mankind has had a fascination with spirals which has endured
for as long as recorded history and archaeological records show. Whether it be
found in the beauty and composition of aspects of flora and fauna, the awesome
power of weather patterns and cataclysmic natural phenomena, the turning of our
planet within our galaxy, the configurations of millions upon billions of stars
and galaxies in the known universe, or the natural patterns occurring in nature
and mathematics, mankind has observed spirals, and in turn, has depicted them
in so many ways. No
human culture has been left untouched by spirals. They can be seen in the pottery
and etchings of cave men. In patterns in architecture, design, art, weaving, clothing,
jewelry and ornamentation. In the dances and the religious rites of most creeds
and cultures. The magic of spirals will remain with us for as long as they surround
us in every aspect of nature and in our unconscious psyche. They are intrinsic
in the fabric of mankind's development , understanding and intelligence. Whether
it be a drawing made by a stick in the sand; adornment such as tattoo's or body
painting, embellishment of pottery; religious settlements or the massive placing
of a spirals or circles of rocks such as Stonehenge. Mankind has used spirals
as an inspiration for creation. For as long as we are surrounded by these images
they will continue to imprint themselves on our unconscious psyche and shall be
reflected in our art and culture for all time. There
is no escaping spirals, whether we consciously notice them or not - and if you
think they do not touch your life in any way - just watch your bathwater as it
swirls down the plughole - or gaze at the leaves on the stem of a plant; or the
petals of a flower. Spirals - the "Golden rule of all things ".
